Patong, the main tourist district of the island has been modernized and improved following the Tsunami of 2004 and covers an area of about 17 square kilometers. Patong Beach is a surprising combination of fine white sand lapped by the blue Andaman sea and an unbridled concentration of accommodation, shops, night clubs, restaurants and attractions.
It is a splendid sandy crescent that stretches for about 3 kilometers, bordered by bars, taverns, restaurants, hotels, kiosks, points for renting pedal boats, boats, diving and snorkeling equipment. In fact, Patong is also the main center for diving activities on the island and offers numerous specialized facilities. Among the thousands of activities that can be practiced are water skiing and parachute towing by motorboat, shopping, day and night along the street stalls: remember that bargaining is in Thai customs.
There is no shortage of shopping centers: the largest and most prestigious are the Central Festival and the JungCeylon Shopping Center, over 300 shops organized in thematic areas, dental clinics, spas, and the most important international and local clothing and fashion brands.
Those who go to Patong also do it for the crazy culinary offer: the seaside restaurants with live music, where it is suggested to order fresh grilled fish and seafood are something unique. Also common are respectable Italian restaurants and Japanese restaurants in a modern style while the heart of the city is the famous Bangla Road, a pedestrian street – which leads from the center towards the sea – dedicated to surprising nightlife: bars, restaurants, fast food, discos, theaters, lap-dance clubs and massage rooms. Patong beach, beautiful as it is, is inevitably crowded. Freedom Beach located behind the promontory at the southernmost end of the famous Patong is an excellent alternative.
It is a picturesque beach of soft white sand, bathed by a crystalline sea and a sandy and sloping seabed. The coral reef is particularly rich in marine life and in fact this beach is one of the best in all of Phuket for snorkeling. The surrounding landscape is also suggestive, with luxuriant vegetation and magnificent rock formations that guard the bay.
