Coolvoyage Destination Papers
Introduction
Coolvoyage Destination Papers is a new professional research series produced by Coolvoyage Destinations / Angelo Calvi & Partners Ltd. Each paper analyses a single tourism destination as a living territorial system, through the interconnected lenses of biodiversity, environmental sustainability, climate resilience, local communities and sustainable destination development.
These are not travel guides or promotional content. They are evidence-led papers written for destination managers, tourism authorities, municipalities, DMOs, tourism businesses, environmental organisations, universities, policy professionals and training providers.
Our approach: from the territory outward
A destination should not begin by asking “How can we attract more tourists?” It should first ask: what resources define this territory, what condition are they in, what pressures affect them, what value do they create for residents and visitors, and what kind of tourism development can the territory sustain over time?
Each paper follows the same six-step sequence:
- Observe. Identify the territory, ecosystems, biodiversity, communities, tourism infrastructure, cultural resources and visitor economy.
- Measure. Identify credible indicators and available evidence on environmental conditions, tourism pressures, resource consumption, climate risks and socioeconomic impacts.
- Understand. Analyse relationships and causes, rather than simply listing statistics.
- Connect. Examine how environmental resources, communities, businesses, public authorities, infrastructure and tourism relate to one another.
- Adapt. Identify where destination management needs to respond to environmental, climatic, social and tourism pressures.
- Develop. Explore how the destination can keep developing while protecting and strengthening the territorial resources on which its value depends.
