has encouraged destinations and tourism businesses to reconsider their relationship with natural resources, communities and the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reducing emissions, limiting waste, protecting biodiversity, managing water and energy responsibly and ensuring that tourism creates benefits for local communities remain fundamental objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the international discussion is increasingly moving beyond the idea of simply reducing tourism&#8217;s negative impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new question is emerging:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can tourism contribute to improving the environmental, social and economic systems on which a destination depends?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the concept of <strong>regenerative tourism<\/strong> becomes particularly relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within its work on climate action, UN Tourism is exploring regenerative approaches capable of connecting <strong>ecosystem health, community wellbeing and climate resilience<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For destination development, this represents an important evolution in perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainability remains the foundation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regenerative tourism should not be understood as a replacement for sustainable tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A destination cannot realistically become regenerative without first addressing the basic principles of sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tourism still needs to reduce unnecessary environmental pressure, use resources responsibly, protect natural and cultural heritage and contribute to viable local economies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Coolvoyage Destinations, <strong>sustainable and slow tourism remain fundamental values of destination development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p transport services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its tourism economy depends on a much wider system of natural resources, landscapes, cultural heritage, infrastructure, local production, communities, knowledge and identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate change makes these relationships even more visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UN Tourism&#8217;s climate action agenda connects tourism with ecosystem conservation and restoration, sustainable food systems, resilient infrastructure, urban planning, innovation and capacity building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A regenerative approach therefore requires looking at tourism within this broader territorial system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective is not simply to make individual tourism products more sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is to understand <strong>how tourism interacts with the territory as a whole<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From protecting resources to strengthening them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional sustainability approaches often begin with protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protect the landscape.<br>Protect biodiversity.<br>Protect cultural heritage.<br>Protect local communities from excessive tourism pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These objectives remain essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regenerative thinking introduces the possibility of moving from protection towards <strong>active contribution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tourism can potentially support ecosystem restoration, strengthen local production, contribute to the continuity of cultural practices, create opportunities for local businesses and encourage visitors to understand the environmental and cultural value of the places they experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UN Tourism&#8217;s COP30 discussions reflected this direction by examining regenerative tourism in relation to ecosystem health, community wellbeing and climate resilience, alongside practical local initiatives involving mitigation, adaptation and regeneration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important word, however, is <strong>potentially<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tourism does not become regenerative simply because it is described that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Positive territorial impact needs to be demonstrated through what actually happens within the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regeneration must be place-based<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as there is no universal model for climate adaptation, there can be no universal model for regenerative tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every territory begins from different conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An island may need to protect marine ecosystems and manage limited natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rural territory may need to maintain landscapes, agricultural activities and local production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A historic city may face questions around public space, resident life, cultural heritage and visitor pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mountain destination may need to respond to environmental changes affecting ecosystems, accessibility and seasonality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regeneration therefore needs to begin with a fundamental question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What does this particular territory need in order to remain environmentally healthy, socially viable and economically resilient?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only then can tourism&#8217;s potential contribution be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Coolvoyage Destinations, this reinforces a central principle of destination development:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>start with the territory, not with the tourism product.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Local communities are part of the destination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regenerative tourism also changes the way local communities are considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Communities are not simply tourism stakeholders to be consulted after a development strategy has already been designed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their knowledge, economic activities, culture and relationship with the territory are part of what makes the destination itself possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The COP30 programme highlighted community-based tourism initiatives where locally led activities can simultaneously support livelihoods, cultural and natural heritage, local identity, resilience and environmental stewardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean that every destination needs to become a community-based tourism destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It demonstrates something broader:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>destination development becomes stronger when local value creation and territorial value creation reinforce each other.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tourism should therefore be considered not as an external economy operating on a territory, but as one component of the territory&#8217;s wider development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From visitor consumption to territorial value<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This perspective also challenges one of the traditional ways of measuring tourism success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visitor numbers, overnight stays and tourism expenditure remain useful indicators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they do not tell us everything about what tourism is producing for a destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A destination can receive more visitors and generate more tourism revenue while simultaneously experiencing increasing pressure on natural resources, infrastructure or resident communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regenerative thinking encourages another set of questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What remains in the territory?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which local businesses benefit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are natural resources being protected or strengthened?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is local identity being maintained?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are tourism revenues circulating within the local economy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is tourism contributing to the long-term resilience of the destination?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These questions move the discussion from <strong>tourism growth<\/strong> towards <strong>territorial value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this distinction is particularly important for sustainable destination development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regeneration requires collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No individual tourism business can regenerate a destination by itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Environmental systems, infrastructure, local economies and communities extend far beyond the boundaries of individual businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regenerative destination development therefore requires collaboration between public authorities, tourism businesses, local producers, cultural organisations, communities and other actors operating within the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This collaborative dimension is also central to the international climate action framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UN Tourism identifies governance, implementation, collaboration and finance among the mechanisms needed to transform climate commitments into practical action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenge for destinations is to transform that collaboration from a collection of individual initiatives into a coherent territorial strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Towards regenerative destination development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sustainable tourism asks us to consider how tourism can operate while reducing environmental and social pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regenerative tourism adds another ambition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How can tourism participate in creating healthier, stronger and more resilient territories?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Coolvoyage Destinations, the answer begins with understanding what already exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Natural resources.<br>Cultural heritage.<br>Local sustainable destinations may depend not only on how successfully tourism reduces what it consumes, but on how effectively it contributes to the territory that makes tourism possible in the first
