It is also changing the territories in which tourism takes place.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many years, the relationship between tourism and climate change has focused primarily on mitigation: reducing emissions generated by transport, accommodation, energy consumption and other tourism activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That remains essential. But destinations are increasingly facing another challenge: <strong>adapting to environmental changes that are already affecting their territories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changing temperatures, extreme weather events, pressure on water resources, ecosystem degradation and changes in biodiversity can influence not only the environment of a destination, but also its accessibility, seasonality, tourism activities and relationship with local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, climate resilience is becoming an important component of sustainable destination development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mitigation and adaptation are different \u2014 but interconnected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate mitigation aims to reduce the causes of climate change, particularly greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate adaptation focuses instead on understanding how territories are being affected by climate change and developing the capacity to respond to those changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a tourism destination, the two approaches need to work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A destination can reduce the environmental impact of its tourism activities while simultaneously preparing for changes that may affect its natural resources, infrastructure, local economy and visitor experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UN Tourism increasingly places both dimensions within the same climate action framework, encouraging practical approaches to <strong>emission reduction and climate adaptation in destinations and tourism businesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Climate resilience begins with understanding the territory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no universal climate adaptation model for tourism destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenges facing an island destination may be very different from those experienced by a mountain community, a rural area or a historic city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A coastal destination may need to consider changing marine and coastal ecosystems. A rural destination may experience changes in water availability, agricultural production or landscape. Urban destinations may face increasing temperatures and pressure on infrastructure and public spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The starting point therefore needs to be the territory itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Coolvoyage Destinations, this means identifying and understanding the relationship between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>territorial resources \u2192 environmental change \u2192 tourism activities \u2192 local communities \u2192 destination development.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach allows climate resilience to become part of destination planning rather than an environmental issue considered separately from tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tourism is connected to a much wider territorial system<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tourism does not operate in isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its value chains interact with transport, energy, food production, infrastructure, ecosystems, businesses and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This interconnectedness is particularly important when considering climate action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the COP30 Action Agenda, UN Tourism highlights the relationship between tourism and areas including <strong>low-emission energy and transport, ecosystem conservation and restoration, sustainable food systems, climate-resilient urban planning and infrastructure, innovation and capacity building<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For destination development, this means looking beyond individual tourism businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is not simply whether a hotel, attraction or transport provider can reduce its environmental footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The broader question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How can the destination as a whole become more resilient?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From individual actions to destination strategy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many sustainability initiatives begin with individual actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reducing energy consumption, limiting waste, improving water efficiency or encouraging lower-impact mobility can all make an important contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a climate-resilient destination requires another level of thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individual actions need to become connected through a broader understanding of the territory and its future development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This requires collaboration between tourism businesses, public authorities, local communities, organisations and other sectors operating within the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The COP30 tourism climate action framework similarly identifies stronger governance, practical implementation, cross-sector collaboration and access to finance among the elements required to accelerate climate action in tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adaptation can also create new ways of thinking about tourism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate adaptation should not be understood only as a defensive response to environmental threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can also encourage destinations to reconsider how tourism is organised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A territory may need to rethink seasonality, visitor flows, mobility or the use of natural resources. It may identify opportunities to strengthen local supply chains, diversify tourism experiences or give greater value to cultural and natural resources that were previously disconnected from the tourism proposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where climate adaptation and sustainable destination development begin to converge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of asking only:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow can we protect tourism from climate change?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">destinations can also ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow should tourism evolve as the territory changes?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective is not simply to preserve an existing tourism model under different environmental conditions. It is to develop destinations capable of responding to change while protecting the resources, identity and communities on which their long-term value depends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Towards climate-resilient destination development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The international discussion around tourism and climate change is progressively moving from isolated environmental actions towards a broader transformation of the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UN Tourism\u2019s work around the Glasgow Declaration and the COP climate agenda connects mitigation with <strong>adaptation, regeneration, collaboration and finance<\/strong>, recognising that climate action requires coordinated responses across destinations, governments, businesses and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Coolvoyage Destinations, climate resilience belongs within the same process as sustainable destination development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It begins by understanding the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It continues by recognising environmental change and its implications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it requires connecting resources, communities, tourism activities and development strategies in ways that can create long-term value while reducing environmental pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A sustainable destination is not simply a destination with a lower impact.
